Junior Year-in-Review
My Junior year at the University of Cincinnati started out with a lot of uncertainties. This would be the first year I wouldn’t be a part of UC Dhadak, I was Internal Vice President of the American Marketing Association, and I was taking a heavy course load that would take up the majority of my time. I had set a few goals for myself at the beginning of the year to help me stay on track and take advantage of the opportunities I had.
The network that my dance team was a part of is called the Desi Dance Network, and naturally there is an executive board that runs it. Because I wasn’t able to commit to dancing this year, I applied for a position on DDN and ended up becoming a moderator. My position entailed overlooking conversations between thousands of dancers across the country, holding online dance and DJ competitions throughout the year, and starting up any new projects (this year we did a Humans of DDN page). This experience was incredibly rewarding because I was able to learn how to coordinate with dancers across the country as well as attend competitions as an audience member for once. I decided I wanted to try something new again, so this upcoming year I will be serving as PR Chair of a new national dance competition – Legends!
As for study abroad programs, I was debating between doing another short one or studying in another country for an entire semester. I ended up finding the Italy/Spain Study Abroad that lasted about 12 days and was on my way! The experience was fantastic because I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Italy has some stereotypes in terms of food and culture, so that helped me form a bit of an idea as to how the country would be. But Barcelona – Americans don’t really have much exposure to Spanish food and culture, so that was a delightful surprise. One really important skill I learned on this trip was because of something that went wrong. My luggage was lost for an entire 4 days and so I had to learn to live with the bare minimum. It wasn’t fun in the moment but now I know that I’m capable of managing with very little possessions.
My position as Internal VP of AMA went so well that I decided to take a bigger role for my senior year. This year I will be President of the American Marketing Association, and this is very exciting because I hope to bring some major changes and improvements in order to make the organization more accessible and useful for students of all majors. I also started a non-profit organization – Unified for Uganda – so I look forward to making that more prominent at UC. I can’t wait to make the most of my final year at UC!
- Dance is my passion, so find a way to actively participate in the dance community.
- Go on another study abroad experience.
- Make the most of my position as Internal VP on the AMA and take up more leadership positions if possible.
