Sophomore year-in-review
This year was one full of change and growth. Sophomore year provided me with numerous opportunities to get involved and develop professionally and personally. Before the school year began, I had set the three following goals for myself:
1. As a captain of UC Dhadak, establish our team of mostly new members as strong and determined to succeed. Compete and place in at least one national competition.
2. Study abroad and expand my worldly views.
3. Become more involved in organizations that will help me grow professionally and gain leadership experience.
UC Dhadak has had a monumentally bigger impact on me than I ever expected it to. Not only was I able to learn new dance styles and improve in styles I already knew over these past two years, but the team has given me the opportunity to win, fail, and stand back up to try again. It has taught me patience and perseverance and the little things like how to interact with new people and make people happy. After a summer full of disasters – 75% of the initial team we had accepted dropped, the automatic bid we received from a competition was to get revoked, and choreographing with two other dancers who came from different backgrounds suddenly seemed like the most difficult thing in the world – we all grew closer than ever and this team became my second family. After months of rigorous practice (with literal tears and blood) and being rejected from two national competitions that we had gone to every year previously, we were accepted into four national competition and placed at two of those. The entire Bollywood Fusion Circuit saw us as a weak link because this was our first year as an all-girls team, but we were able to prove how strong we were and made a lasting impression on our competition.
Over spring break, I had the opportunity to travel to France and Belgium with KBS to go on company visits to make connections and grow professionally. Throughout the trip, we were introduced to professionals from various backgrounds, which gave us the chance to network and learn about international marketing techniques. We also spent a large portion of our time exploring the cities that we visited (aside from just the tourist attractions). It was incredible to see how differently people live their every day lives in other countries, yet some of the same marketing techniques appeal to them.
After a year of getting used to college life, I decided it was time to get more involved in organizations that will help me grow and develop as a professional. Becoming more involved in the American Marketing Association (I will be Internal VP this year) has been one of the most rewarding experiences. We already have numerous projects underway to help AMA expand and become more involved with student organizations and local businesses. This is a great way for students to gain real marketing experience while helping the community. Being more involved with AMA is just the start of me getting more involved on campus. I hope to spend the next two years gaining leadership experiences in organizations such as Unified for Uganda and Finance Club.
